How to apply for a non-immigrant visa

Step 1 - Learn more about the non-immigrant visa process

What is a visa, whether you need a visa, whether to apply in person, categories of visas.

Step 2 - Make an appointment

For your visa interview at the Consulate General serving your area.

Step 3 - Download and complete the visa application forms

All visa forms must be completed online, prited, signed and have a readable barcode.

Step 4 - Gather supporting documentation

Find out which documents should accompany your non-immigrant application. Please do not send any supporting documents in advance of your interview.

Step 5 - Pay the non-refundable visa application fee

There is a world-wide non-refundable application fee of USD131.00. For further information regarding this fee increase, please refer to our fee information page. This fee can be paid at any Australia Post outlet. You will need to advise the counter assistant that you would like to pay the U.S. non-immigrant visa application fee. Ensure you bring the original receipt for this payment with you to the interview.

Step 6 - Have your photo taken

The dimensions are very specific.

Step 7 - Submit your application in person

On your designated appointment date. Please read our instructions for entering the Consulate General.

Step 8 - Receive your passport and visa by mail

This usually takes 3-4 business days, but can take longer. The Consulate General cannot be held responsible for extra costs due to changing tickets or rebooking flights if delivery is delayed. We therefore strongly urge you not to purchase tickets until you have received your visa and passport in the mail.
