Sailors from the USS Cole naval ship formed the first American baseball team to play in Goa when they took on the Goa Baseball Association's senior team on April 23, during a port visit.

It was a friendly though lopsided match, with the Indians winning 13-1 before a cheering crowd of more than 100 young baseball players and enthusiasts, American sailors, officials from Goa and the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai.

The Goa team members practice year-round and have polished their skills to a high level, winning several Indian championships.

The USS Cole team has been deployed on the ship since January. There is no practice field onboard, but they did their best to brush up their skills after arriving in India.

Americans are happy to see how baseball is becoming more popular around the world, the USS Cole's Operations Officer, Lieutenant Ray Glenn, said after the game. The old phrase, "It's as American as baseball and apple pie," has a new variant: "It's as Indian as baseball and masala."
